Something Important

Something Important

Hello there you incredibly wonderful, fantastic, beautiful, gorgeous, interesting smart person. How are you doing? Doing well? That is good to hear. I’m doing well as… well. Thank you for asking. So I want to talk to you about something that I think is very important. It’s about sharing yourself and I talk about that a lot, self. I mean I made a 360 video just about it. But I really do believe that we at heart are all curating. That’s all we do and especially with social media, we do it even more every single day. Think about when you go to Facebook, when you go to Twitter, when you go to Instagram. The things that you’re sharing are either bits that you’ve curated from your life, or it’s things that you have found online or in the real world that you are then sharing with your friends or your audience or whomever. I mean I think that’s just such an interesting dynamic like for example, last weekend I was in New York, I was at my friend’s bachelor/bachelorette party and we were celebrating their engagement and it was really nice but I didn’t post about it because it was separate than what I share with you and what I share with you here is separate from what I share with you on VSauce 3 and what I share with you on VSauce 3 is different from what I share with you on Instagram. And so on and so forth. But we break that up. There’s these little bits of us that only exist on certain platforms and I think that is so interesting and I think we all do it. I mean even the videos that I’ve made, not even the fact that I’m using Youtube but on VSauce 3 those videos are an extension of me, they’re a part of me it’s how I think about things or how I want things to be and I hope when I’m trapped in my little head, that others will enjoy it and others will see what I see and get the same excitment from it. I make it in the hopes that somebody else out there in the world will agree with it or will like it or will make me feel like I’m not so alone in here ’cause you think about that a lot, don’t you? I do. There’s these thoughts that you have and you wonder if anyone else thinks that way too but you’re scared to ask because what if they say “no”, what if they go “uh..you’re weird. No, I don’t like rubbing lobster meat on my face” You don’t have to, that’s fine I mean I don’t like doing that… And you find out there’s people that have the same fears as you, same aspirations and I love that, and it is scary, I mean posting anytime is scary. Even if you post on Facebook hoping that you get like, a like or somebody notices the video that you shared, someone notices the photo of you at that thing that was really meaningful to you. And that’s why we do it, we curate. This morning I got a new toner for my face. It was fantastic but I’m not gonna post about it ’cause it’s not..to me of value. Really? But then what is value? I don’t…That’s another.. anyway. Whatever. The reason I’m making this video is because, I don’t know if you remember this, but three years ago, maybe, there was a feature. If I liked a video, let’s say you’re subscribed to me and if I liked a video it would show up in your subscription feed it would say “VSauce 3 or jakerawr liked whatever video”. Or if I commented on a video that would also get sent to your subscription feed and I loved that feature ’cause it was curation. It allowed me to share with you something that I thought was really really great. Something I thought was really unique or really special and I could share it with you and it would go directly to your feed. I make so few videos that doing collabs or things like that is really difficult. And also the way that my videos are structured on VSauce 3 at least make it hard to do an easy quick little collab where I’m like “hey go check out this guy’s channel or this girl’s channel or this person’s channel” but being able to share people’s content on the platform itself allowed me to take my audience and share with them something new. It allowed me to be a curator and it allowed me to collab in a sense with other channels, but then the feature went away. So the reason I bring this up is because months ago, maybe even over a year ago YouTube asked me if I would be interested in talking about a product that they were working on and by product I mean just a feature on YouTube, nothing additional, that you have to get. So they came up with, they’re working on something and it actually comes out today and I’m very excited about it because I’m excited about the curation aspect of it I’m excited to be able to share things on this platform with you that maybe don’t fit in the video or maybe I don’t have time to collab with a person but it still allows me to share and be a part of the community and I think that’s the most important thing. The best way to grow your channel is to collab. But it’s really difficult sometimes, so being able to share people’s content is amazing. It might not be a huge growth spurt but it allows some new people to go watch their content and that is meaningful and that is valuable and it really is community, that’s what YouTube is about. It’s about sharing. This is sharing, a vlog is sharing. Science videos are sharing information. This is sharing other content and I love it. I really do. I think it’s one of the most valuable and important things that you can do. and… anyway, sorry getting a little.. So anyway, the feature is called community. And I’m really stoked on it, I’ve been testing it out for the past couple of weeks It’s on VSauce 3, that’s where the community tab lives so if you go to youtube.com/vsauce3 I’ll put the direct link in the description you can check it out and you can see what it’s like, you can actually interact and also this is exciting for me because I don’t really do behind the scenes stuff too much but because people are subscribed to my YouTube channel for my videos it feels like that’s the avenue, that’s where I share that part of me is on my YouTube community page because that’s what people are there for they’re there for my content so I can share photos, or I can share pre-production stuff. So that’s gonna go there and also just me sharing other people’s content on this platform will go there which is probably honestly what I’m gonna use it for most and also you can post photos and whatever stuff and use it like traditional social media feed but for me it’s really about curation and it’s really about sharing production. So I would definitely recommend checking it out and there’s only a handful of channels currently like myself, the Vlogbrothers, a few other channels that have this feature enabled so we’re testing it. It would be really helpful and make me look really good if you could go test it out as well. Just go to the link, again, down there to the VSauce 3 page But anyway, this is like a long tangent thing but being able to share is very very important and that’s what social media has allowed us to do but again it brings up this very interesting thought that I one day will hopefully be able to figure out which is what version of me on social media is the most accurate of who I am or are they all little bits of me? If you were to put them together it’s like a jigsaw puzzle, I don’t know but I love that, I love that I get to create videos and these videos are expressions of myself like this seems very straightforward, right? It’s me talking directly to you but I find actually that my VSauce 3 videos are when I’m the most honest. There’s a reason: so I read every single comment on my personal channel. On VSauce 3, I generally don’t really read any of the comments and it’s this weird thing where I put so much of myself into that video that I’m scared to hear what people say so I try to step back, at least for a few weeks before reading them because I’m just so emotionally invested in that creation. Anyway, ok.. that’s all I got for you today. This is just a rambling mess oh but I haven’t had a ramble in a while have I? No I haven’t. Point point point. Luna’s over there and she’s scared now. I’m sorry Luni. Uh, ok. That’s everything. I just didn’t…sleep now, sleep now… name that movie. But remember, it is not goodbye, oh no, it’s never goodbye, it’s…
